…so I may have been a bit premature when I said it was the last blog of 2011 in my last entry…
Before the break, I wanted to quickly give our readers a summarized list of questions we’ve gotten regarding the ArcticLink III VX in the last month or so of press and investor interviews. You can find them below, and feel free to add to the list in the comment section.
Q: What is the smallest resolution VEE HD+ and DPO HD+ can work at?
A: 320 x 240
Q: How about display sizes?
A: Display size is not a factor in VEE HD+’s effectiveness, although larger displays will typically fill more of the users field of view, increasing the perceived effect of VEE DPO HD+ can be used on any size display, but as we measure it’s effectiveness on total system savings, larger displays will always be better.
Q: How about other markets besides smartphones and tablets?
A: This technology is applicable to other applications like in-car entertainment, aviation entertainment, portable media players, personal navigation devices, and others
Q: How much processor resources does VEE take:
A: VEE doesn’t require any processor resources.
Q: How did you shrink the chip vs ALII?
A: Through optimization of die design, as well as the use of a more aggressive process node. (Author’s note: this question was asked before a blog of the same subject was published)
Q: How did you lower the power consumption vs ALII?
A: Mainly a combination of optimization of die design and process node shrink (Authors note: also covered in a subsequent blog)
Q: Is there a processor in the chip?
A: No, nor a GPU. The ALIII devices are custom-designed, allowing us to lower power consumption versus a GPU or CPU while maintaining performance
Q: Who uses VEE in production?
A: Pantech and BenQ
Q: The technology seems great. Why doesn’t everyone use it?
A: Our ALII served MIDI->RGB and RGB->RGB applications, which did limit our ability to address a good percentage of available architectures. The ALIII allows us to address almost all common architectures. (Authors’ note: you can find more on this in this blog)
Q: It’s been two years since your last product introduction. When will your next one be?
A: Certainly shorter than two years from now!
Q: There are so many processors and different types of displays that are used for Smartphones and Tablets, which one will we or will we not support?
A: We support virtually all processors and all types of displays (other than e-ink). We also point out that with Pico Projectors, we work with all type of light engines.
Q: Many manufacturers have processors that claim to already optimize the video output, how are we different with VEE/DPO?
A: We have a technology that is a pixel-by-pixel, frame-by-frame optimization based on the human visual system, which differs from the typical global, machine-based approach. We also combine power savings without negatively affecting the visual experience. These are two unique approaches that differentiate us from other methods.
So…I am serious now in saying that this is it for 2011 (unless something else comes up….).
Happy Holidays,
-Paul, and the rest of us at QuickLogic!
