Greetings From Miami

As you may have seen in our press release, some of us are down here in Miami at the MIPI Alliance meeting.  We are at the demo day function, showing the ArcticLink III demonstration board running a 720p MIPI display (using the VX3B2B), as well as the Pantech phone with the ArcticLink II device with VEE.

    New Sharp display technology said to triple mobile battery life

    Sharp said Tuesday that mobile devices using its new IGZO display technology, which can triple battery life while offering higher touch sensitivity, are about to surge.

    The company decline to provide specific details, but Sharp executive Masami Ohbatake told reporters in Tokyo that the two devices already announced with the technology would soon be joined by many more.

    In recent weeks, Sharp has announced a smartphone and a small tablet for the Japanese market that have screens employing IGZO, named after the indium gallium zinc oxide semiconductor on which it is based.

    The Sharp Aquos Pad SHT21 tablet has a 7-inch IGZO display with a resolution of 1280 pixels by 800 pixels. Sharp is a known supplier to Apple.

    IGZO can be used to make screens with smaller pixels than current screens, drawing less power and providing greater accuracy.

    Sharp says its new Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E, scheduled to go on sale by the end of this year, can last two days on a single charge of its 2,320mAh battery under normal usage.

    Its Aquos Pad tablet, to go on sale in early December, can play video back for 10 hours without a recharge. Both the phone and the tablet will only be sold in Japan.

      Hello Terrence,

      Thanks for the comment. My initial reaction to the Sharp announcement is that there are many types of display technologies, and it is only reasonable to assume that technology will improve over time. In actuality, a announcement like this from such as respected company as Sharp validates our belief that power consumption is a huge issue for mobile phone and tablet makers (frankly, in any hand-held consumer device).

      I’d also note that nowhere in the announcement is anything on viewability improvements that could be attributed to this technology. The great thing about VEE and DPO is that as a pair, they offer BOTH viewability and power savings, whereas competing technologies tend to offer only one, often to the detriment of the other.
