So, the big announcement leading our earnings call today was that our VEE technology is now shipping to Micron for their iPhone 4/4S and iPod Touch pico projector accessory called the PoP Video. I’ve spent some time with the finished-good product, and I have to say it is truly outstanding. Our friends at Micron have done an outstanding job of creating a pico projector that is both compelling in performance and in price.
To read about PoP Video, and to order them, head over to thepopvideo.com
We’ll have a video blog in the next few days detailing how VEE appears in the system. For now, here is what we can tell you:
- VEE is set to run automatically, but can be manually adjusted within an app that accompanies the pico
- Of course, VEE will only effect the projected content and not what is on the embedded display
- Orders are being accepted at thepopvideo.com right now
- At $99, it’s the most price-competitive accessory pico we’ve seen
Happy to answer questions you may have…
Are OEM’S waiting to see if something like the Pop Video Really takes off before they commit to embedding the pico(of course with VEE)in phones. While I am excited to be in any product it doesn’t seem likely that this product will be around to long. Just like GPS units are becoming obsolete with now being in phones.
Based on our reviews of many pico projectors on Picopros.com, it seems that there will be a market for both an accessory projector (like the PoP Video) as well as for embedded projectors. Embedded projectors haven’t really been adopted on a large scale yet, mainly due to cost, size, and power consumption. These things are being addressed by all the display engine manufacturers. Hope this helps.
Terence,
I agree with Paul M on his assessment. I would further assert that the viewability (brightness to some) of embedded pico projectors may not be up to the expectations of OEMs. VEE helps that (obviously). The message that we’ve heard from OEMs is exactly that.
