As we announced not too long ago, our resident tech guru, Tim Saxe (CTO of QuickLogic), presented at the Linley Tech Mobile Conference yesterday. The presentation, entitled “Power is the Hidden Cost of Flexibility” is linked below.
A summary of the presentation: Typically a discussion about power challenges in mobile devices focuses on the power consumption of bigger, better screens and quad- or octal-core processors. Dr. Saxe will discuss the trade-offs of power versus flexibility in the less visible parts of the system. In particular the use of processors has been driven by applications where their flexibility can create tremendous value that justifies a slightly larger battery. The flexibility of processors also allows them to solve non-application problems such as sensor data acquisition. While some tasks can be done with software, this approach is not necessarily the best way. QuickLogic will show how an all-hardware solution can reduce power consumption by a factor of 10 in a task such as sensor data acquisition.
