Presentation from the FPD Forum

Posted on December 12, 2012 by Tim Saxe

As promised, here is the presentation given at today’s FPD Forum in Taipei, Taiwan by our own Edward Lien.   As you can see, the presentation centered about QuickLogic’s ArcticLink III VX CSSP, and how VEE‘s display viewability and DPO‘s system power savings can benefit designers and OEM’s of smartphones and tablets.

Happy to answer any questions.

We will publish a recording from the seminar as it becomes available on our YouTube page

    Paul,
we met in Miami. When do you think the video will be ready? btw, I thought yours from last year was just fine. The 19 slide presentation for this year’s is really good, though.
    Best regards,
    Chris

      Hey Chris,

Re: the timing of the video…we are actually at the mercy of the people who put on the forum. In the past, it’s taken about 4 weeks for the video to arrive at QL. If I am able to get it earlier, I will.

      Happy holidays

      Paul

    Paul-

When the BX was introduced it was with the idea that it could serve as a placeholder in the design and would hopefully be upgraded to the VX as the design progressed and VEE/DPO could be evaluated. Is there a possibility that the BX/VX strategy may enable OEMs to spin multiple handset models from a single design. For example, a low-end phone using a MIPI 2-lane processor and BX for 720p that does not have an “enhanced display” and a higher-end VX version that does have a VEE enhanced display… one design, two models, two price points. Is this tenable from an OEM manufacturing perspective? Is this design flexibility part of your BX/VX sales strategy? Thanks.

      Brian,

The VX and BX are pin-identical, and as I described at http://quicklogic.wpengine.com/vee-2/on-moving-the-bx-to-a-vx/, the scope of the change isn’t great. We intentionally made it as easy as possible as part of our design strategy on BX.

Now, whether is tenable from an OEM manufacturing perspective…that question is likely best asked to them. In your scenario:

      * The PCBs would be different, although they would look (to the eye) 100% the same, until you saw the part number on the QuickLogic device
      * The firmware loaded onto the phone would be slightly different, given the VX’s calibration needs

So, again, best asked to them…

Good Morning Paul. We met back in August 2011 at your office. I hope you are doing well.
A question for you that you may not be able to answer, but I was wondering if you have been doing any work with a company called “Compound Photonics”, or can you tell me if you have at least heard of the company. They are developing a laser based pico projector and I was wondering if QUIK would be a candidate with their technology. Thank you for your time. Ted

      Ted,

Happy holidays, and I hope you are staying warm if you’re in Alaska!

I can’t answer the question of whether we are working with Compound Photonics, but I can say that I see no reason why VEE wouldn’t be applicable to what they do. I can also say that we are confident in VEE’s ability to increase pico projector viewability/effective lumens on DLP, LCOS, and Laser-based engines.
