The newest video posted to our YouTube channel is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.
The video demonstrates only a few of the capabilities of the QuickLogic’s ArcticLink 3 S1-based Always-on Context Aware Sensor Hub Catalog CSSP. Yes — its a true sensor hub — it interfaces with the 9DOF sensors within the device, collects and interprets data, and then makes context change notifications to the processor based on decisions made by the Sensor Hub’s Flex Fusion Engine (FFE). While the video shows a single context change of a device being picked up from a table, many other things are possible with this device right out “of the box” — walking, running, sitting, pedometer, phone in pocket, etc… We’ve also added a small video overlay showing current consumption of the Sensor Hub device (in µA…multiply by 1.2[volts] to get your power consumption in µW), demonstrating that we are well, well below the 2% OEM threshold.
Our true sensor hub Catalog CSSP device offers OEMs unmatched flexibility, power consumption, and usability, with NO OEM device design time required.
Finally, apologies for the presenter, as always!
Dear Paul,
thank you for the demonstration. I was wondering if you could comment on Invensense latest press release: InvenSense™ Introduces the World’s First MotionTracking SoC Optimized for
Google’s Android KitKat 4.4
According to the press release it will eliminate the need for a Sensor Hub.
Thank you.
Hello Luca,
I would challenge the validity of the statement that it will “eliminate the need for a sensor hub”. The device announced appears to be a SiP (system in package) design, including an accelerometer, gyroscope and sensor hub (what they appear to call a “DMP”) into that single package. So, they aren’t exactly eliminating the need for sensor hubs–in their case, they are simply integrating the sensor hub into a package that also contains only two of the three 9DOF devices OEMs typically use. There are certainly OEMs that might prefer to buy the entire sensor sub-system from a single supplier. However, we believe the majority of the market is interested in the ability to customize devices, and use the combination of the best sensors (regardless of manufacturer — and using more than two sensors in this case), the best sensor hub (regardless of manufacturer), and the best sensor algorithms (regardless of developer). When you use a SiP, you are limited in your choices. Further, while the press talks of ‘lowering power consumption’, an actual figure is not given. QuickLogic is very proud that we can demonstrate using actual silicon that our sensor hub runs under 300µW — that should be obvious by the fact that we talk it up whenever we can!
So, while we respect our competitors and their products, we are undeterred in our belief that our ArcticLink 3 S1 offers unmatched flexibility, size, and power consumption, and that our Sensor Hub line offers OEMs the best choice for always-on context awareness.
Thanks for the question and for reading!
Paul
